As my finace and I discussed our wedding options we had decided that a destination wedding was the right fit for us. We wanted a unique location that would allow us to travel and something different than the typical traditional weddings that we have been attending for most of our lives. We wanted to have as many of our family and friends involved in helping us celebrate whether it was to attend the actual wedding or celebrating at another festivity that we would plan.
After doing a little research, talking with other couples and figuring out dollar amounts, we discovered that doing a destination wedding to another part of the world would in fact be considerably cheaper for us than doing the wedding in our own back yard. We thought having the wedding in Colorado or Jackson, Wyoming would be an exciting idea but we found the cost of these wedding locations we were considering would have been even more expensive for our guests and ourselves. We wanted an expereince that would be unique to our guests and us.
Bryon and I decided to do our wedding in Germany after we visited this country during a summer vacation. I never imagined my perfect wedding but we figured since everything seemed to be falling into place with wedding arrangements, the location was meant to be!
We allowed our family and friends plenty of time to plan by announcing our intentions to them over a year and a half prior to the event which by the way will take place on June 18th, 2008. I am discovering though that as I plan the details if we had told our guests 6 months, 1 1/2 years or 3 years in advance it seems to never be enough time because the date seems to be approaching much faster than I had anticipated.
When planning a destination wedding one important detail that I need to keep in mind is that not all guests will be able to attend due to reasons such as budget constraints, fears of traveling outside of ones comfort zone or the destination is not desirable to the guest. Prior to making the decsion to marry abroad Bryon and I discussed this very topic. We both realized that not everyone would be able to attend. Bryon has dealt with this choice better than I have as people begin to provide us with their plans regarding attending the wedding or not. Individuals that I thought would make it are unable to, but I have to continue to remind myself that this is our wedding and we are doing what we want, how we want in a location that is meaningful and unique to both of us.
We will be having an engagement party in the town that we live in and a reception upon our return after the wedding to celebrate with family and friends in the area where we both grew up. As I plan the details with Bryon I hope to write some useful posts to help ini your Destination Wedding Planning.
